A little more on SICAF2007
Hi guys,
I have to apologize for this coming in late, but here's a little bit more story and pictures of our trip to SICAF2007.
Basically SICAF2007 is open to the public and ran for 5 days. It's a festival to showcase Comics and Animations particularly from Koreans of course. It's also a place for new studios to pitch their animation ideas to a panel of juries and hopefully get picked up for a full production.
Seeing the event, we hoped that the animation industry in Malaysia will grow bigger and hopefully have our own animation festival just as grand if not more. I did some photo snapping of the locals enjoying the festival. Though we mostly stayed at the booth and entertained visitors who were interested to know more about our film. There was also business forums conducted for the companies who came to learn from the big production houses and exchange contacts. Anyway here are some pictures.
SICAF2007 was big. It was open to the public so it was filled with students and kids. Comics and animation is big in Korea so everyone wanted to come in to check out the latest stuff. There were 3 halls, 1 for comics, 1 for business pitchings, and 1 for miscellaneous booths with merchandises and University booths. The public could come to the booths and take pictures of their favourite mascots, wear big masks and take pictures, check out gigantic sized models of popular manga/animation characters, and many more. There was quite a lot of merchandise being sold and one booth had Nintendo DSes on display for kids to try them out hands on.
Here's our booth under MSC Malaysia. Check it out the Geng trailer is on widescreen TV! Surprisingly industry people from China and Korean companies were really interested with our film and asked quite some questions regarding it despite having a slight communication barrier (which was solved easily with our Korean interpreter who conveyed our message well, but she's not my new girlfrieenndd!!! Jangan salah paham!)

Here are some pictures of the students' booths from animation and comic Universities. I must say they were very creative in designed beautiful booths with limited building materials. The picture on the right shows the line up of animation company pitches in the business section where industry people can check out their pitches individually on the computer. The pitches were really great.

Alas we couldn't stay till Sunday and had to leave by Friday since the flights were fully booked. It was also good to be back home in Malaysia early as i was longing for some Nasi Goreng Biasa quite a bit. Thanks to MDeC for inviting us for SICAF and the whole organizers. Before we left Adam from MDeC treated us with a nice dinner on the night before we left, so thank you Adam as well hehe. Ooohh king crab sedap.

Tech & U - Local Animation Industry Has a Long Way To Go

Tech & U's section in NST today has mention something about GENG. Basically the report is about how local animation industry still lack behind from other country like Thailand and Singapore which already produce their own 3D featured film. Mohd Nizam give some of his opinion regarding this issue and believe GENG will be the 1st 3D featured film produced by local animation company.

A LOT OF HAPPENING IN KOREA
He, he... on the second day of our program, we follow Datuk for a visit to Seoul Animation Centre. The place is just like MDeC where they have 6 companies in the incubator.
Below is their audio editing room. In their video editing room. the storage capacity is 20 tera bytes. Datuk Seri terkejut dengarnya.

In the evening we visited KOFIC film studio. The place is somewhere outside Seoul on top of the mountain and the palace is huge. It was build at a cost of USD500mil and similar to mini Hollywood. KOFIC provided in door and out door studio for film makers in Korea at nominal fee.

Kofic will built the set as required by the fil makers.
Below is the mortuary set built for a film being shot in the studio at the time of our visit. It is a ghost story which happened in hospital. They built the replica of the hospital to the very detail.
Below is the miniature set of a port. This is the set that they build to do an animation film called WonderfulDays which they released 5 yrs ago. They built the background in miniature to detail and the characters in 2D. All moving object they use 3d technique and composite it. It took them 6yrs to do it with a cost of USD 12mil. All the miniature sets are preserved at the studio. The making are extraodinary, but the film, I do not think have a large impact.
This morning I joint Anas & Safwan to attend the Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF) while Datuk Seri continue with their visist to Japan.
Safwan with Koraen totoro...
Anas with new girlfriend... our Korean interpreter. Mumu mesti jealous..he.he..

Atok being interviewed by the Star reporter....

Posing in front of our booth....

Some of the merchandising,,,,

The SICAF is not as good as MIPTV. It is open to school children... after two hours most of the brochures and DVD gone. Those coming from China keep pushing their product for us to sell. There are not many foreign buyers.... so at 2pm bila semua dah lapar Atok ask them to follow me to Itaewon.... just like Shah Alam to Kl to look for halal restaurant. Anas & Safwan really eat since they did not get anything except bread. Maggi mee pun tak bawa. After lunch we went shopping.... booth we let Adam in-charge.

I AM IN KOREA
He..he... today Atuk and Nenek arrived in Seoul at 8.00 am this morning. We are suppose to follow our Minister of Culture, Art and Heritage to visit some of the Korean Film Studio and Korean Animation Center. After check-in into Lotte Hotel, a posh hotel which cost me a bomb, what to do when you follow them..... we have a breifing for the minister arrival tomorrow.
Actually, the minister will only arrive tommorrow and all the president men have to make the arrangement first. I do not know how MDeC arranged it, we all under MDeC invitation, stay in executive floor while all president men in normal floor. Thanks to Mr. Ismal. After breifing, Ato belanja Mr. Azahar from MMU and Mr. Ismal for lunch at Pakistani Restaurant in Itaewon.
After lunch Atok pun blogginglah...

He..he.. Atok nak gi shopping. I will let you know more after tommorrow.
Bye..bye

New Animators!
Hi everyone. Recently our team has grown a little bigger with the arrival of 2 new animators and 2 trainees. Soooo here they are, the new teammates of the animators lineup.

Zis is Alex. All the way from Subang. He's a speedy animator who's already got a sprained ankle only on the 2nd week. (I bet by now you guys are now wondering how we accept newcomers). Alex graduated from the One academy, making him the first non-MMU-graduated staff we have.

Meet Seng Kee. He just joined as of today. The first time he came in I thought he reminded me of someone but i couldn't put my finger to it. It was only when I saw him at our badminton games after work did I got it. Him holding his racket instantly reminded me of Hiro Nakamura. Huahuahua. Btw he's a Lim Kok Wing graduate, so he's the 2nd non-MMU-graduated staff
The new animators are actually experienced with working in the industry for a few years yet still young and wacky just like us. How they perform in our weekly badminton games is yet to be seen. That is if they survive the first game. (2 words: Ejean + Dini)
Here are the trainees who have just joined. Their arrival is a start of our training program where we will are testing a module to train students in 3D Animation from scratch. So far so good as they are progressing really well.

This is Zirul, Jam, and Asrol. Actually Asrol has been with us for quite some time, where he studies at Go Academy whilst getting guidance from the Les' Copaque staff at the same time. Zirul and Jam are straight from Melaka, trying to learn from the 3D team in our office. Hopefully we can open up a Sekolah Animasi Les' Copaque someday hehe.
So there you have it. We'll be expanding a little bit more soon, so be ready to meet new ones. Our little petite durian hut is growing bigger and bigger.
